Shark Day

Students from the Shoalhaven had the opportunity to get close and personal with Port Jacksons at Greenfields Beach Over the two days some 250 pupils from Vincentia High, Vincentia Public, Jervis Bay Primary and Sanctuary Point Public schools took part in Project Shark, a Taronga Zoo initiative designed to encourage the community to take action to protect marine and terrestrial life. Students were lucky enough to study shark behavior and movements, working with researchers from Macquarie University to tag and weigh wild sharks, NSW Fisheries to identify shark species recorded on Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) and teamed with Steve Leake from the Illawarra Environmental Center to examine the amazing creatures of the rocky shore. The day was a culmination of weeks of hard work by the students, who were rewarded with wonderful weather and a once in a lifetime chance to pat a shark! sharkday
